The Mid-Michigan Children’s Museum, 315 West Genesee Avenue in Saginaw, is breaking ground for Phase II of the popular Solar Spot exhibit. Funded by Hemlock Semiconductor, the Dow Corning and S.C. Johnson Foundations, the second phase of this exciting project will be initiated in May. An outdoor pavilion will be built in the south courtyard. The seating area beneath the pavilion will provide a shaded area for MMCM guests. Solar panels will be arranged on the roof of the pavilion for the purpose of collecting solar energy! A distinctive solar flair will greet MMCM visitors as they enter the building. Previous grants from NAIFA, and the Alice E. Turner and Nickless Foundations provided the funding for the installation of a sturdy vinyl fence that will enclose the entire courtyard, providing a safe and secure area for Museum visitors. Several area contractors are offering their materials and services toward the construction of the pavilion. A gala open house will be scheduled to recognize construction partners and their families.
Viewed from inside the building, the flair and outdoor pavilion will integrate the solar story with exhibit elements inside. Simple telemetry will educate MMCM visitors about the amount of energy generated by the 16 solar panels and the solar flair as well as the daily weather forecast.
Fans of the MMCM have the opportunity to demonstrate their support by underwriting the cost of an individual solar panel. A $200 donation will secure a solar panel in the name of a family member or organization. Sponsors will have the satisfaction of knowing their donation will assist in capturing valuable sun light while honoring their special person! Recipients of the designated solar panels will be identified on a plaque located near the pavilion and receive a novel solar powered keepsake to recognize their donation.
