The Mid-Michigan Children’s Museum (MMCM) recently received $3,032.00 in proceeds from the 10th Annual Bee for Literacy held on May 6, 2015. Altrusa International of Saginaw, Inc., and the Rotary Club of Saginaw hosted the Spelling Bee for 12 business-sponsored teams to compete for a coveted trophy and bragging rights. Both Altrusa and Rotary are supporters of literacy efforts in our community.
To date nearly $30,000.00 have been raised. Past recipients of the proceeds include: the READ Association of Saginaw, Public Libraries of Saginaw, Prime Time, the Living Learning Lab at the Children’s Zoo, United Way of Saginaw – Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Literacy Council of Saginaw Adult Tutoring and the Saginaw News Read Today – Achieve Tomorrow.
This year’s funds will be used to support the new MMCM STEM-based 2nd Graders are 1st Class Initiative that expands the experiential learning of second-grade students in the Great Lakes Bay Region and surrounding counties by teaching the properties of air and water using the Museum’s Amazing Airways and Water, Water Everywhere galleries. The high-quality academic lessons are taught by the MMCM Education Team and are carefully crafted “learning expeditions” which cannot be duplicated in any classroom. In addition to meeting the state standards, the lessons position 2nd graders at the very beginning of the “pipeline of talent in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)!”
