MID-MICHIGAN CHILDREN’S MUSEUM AWARDED $24,000 GRANT FROM PNC FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

The Mid-Michigan Children’s Museum (MMCM) has been awarded a $24,000 grant from the PNC Foundation to support pre-K educational enrichment programming and professional development for educators in the Saginaw Intermediate School District (Saginaw ISD) Head Start/Early Head Start Program.  Head Start and Early Head Start Programs support the mental, social, and emotional development of children from birth to age 5. In addition to education services, programs provide children and their families with health, nutrition, social, and other support services.  PNC provided the funding in support of PNC Grow Up Great, its multi-year, $350 million, bilingual program in early childhood education.

The grant from the PNC Foundation, which receives its principal funding from the PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: PNC), will allow an expanded partnership between the MMCM and Saginaw ISD Head Start, with funding over 24 months. MMCM and Saginaw ISD will partner to create out-of-classroom, experiential learning opportunities for 100% of the children enrolled in Saginaw ISD’s Head Start program.  Classroom teachers will receive four professional development sessions and Head Start families will enjoy six opportunities to come to the MMCM to Play and Learn together with mentoring from the MMCM staff and trained volunteers.  Each family will also receive a copy of “Words are Here, There and Everywhere,” a multi-media educational kit created by Sesame Workshop as part of a continuing partnership with PNC.

“This is the perfect community collaboration offering children enrolled in the Saginaw ISD Head Start/Early Head Start program and their families to enjoy the unique Play and Learn experiences offered by the MMCM!” said Angela Barris, MMCM President and CEO.

“Research shows that 90 percent of a child’s brain is formed by the time he or she is 5 years old,” said PNC Tim Salisbury, PNC regional president for Mid-Michigan, speaking on behalf of The PNC Foundation. “This type of quality early childhood education programing has the potential to positively influence the lives of young children.”

The PNC Foundation, which receives its principal funding from The PNC Financial Services Group (www.pnc.com), actively supports organizations that provide services for the benefit of communities in which it has a significant presence. The foundation focuses its philanthropic mission on early childhood education and community and economic development, which includes the arts and culture.
