Like helping children play and make discoveries? Or would you rather work behind the scenes? The MMCM is looking for volunteers just like you! Volunteer opportunities range from a Museum Docent to office assistant or gardener.

All volunteers are required to complete a Volunteer Application Form and  Background Check Form before volunteering with us. Please print and complete the forms and return them via email to, fax at (989) 399-0431, or mail them to us at P.O. Box 2283, Saginaw, Michigan, 48605.

Museum Docent (Guide)  

A Museum Docent provides supervision and guidance to guests of the museum as they experience the galleries.  A docent may volunteer for a preferred time period either weekly or as assigned by the MMCM Volunteer Coordinator.


The MMCM Museum Docent will work in conjunction with the MMCM staff and volunteers to provide an exceptional learning experience for children, infant to age 12 years, and their families who visit the MMCM.  Under the direction of the MMCM Play Educator and Volunteer Coordinator, the Museum Docents:

  • work with the Play Educator to provide age appropriate (infant to 12 years) play and learn programs

  • assist in the facilitation of visitors and groups in the galleries at the museum

  • participate in educational programs when appropriate

  • direct stimulating and constructive educational play

  • provide a safe and hospitable environment for visitors to the museum

  • assist in maintenance procedures that assure a clean and safe experience for children by helping tidy up galleries and birthday party/program rooms

  • explain play and artistic applications of MMCM to maximize the MMCM experience for all visitors

  • monitor safety and report repairs of individual elements

  • demonstrate communication skills including verbal and written

  • be able to stand for two hours at a time and be able to lift up to 20 pounds.  Accommodations can be provided

  • volunteer an occasional weekend and/or evening shift

  • pass a criminal background check

  • complete volunteer application

  • attend an orientation

  • commit to 20 volunteer hours a year


Family Volunteers

Children between the ages of 9 and 12 can volunteer at the museum with a parent or legal guardian. A parent or legal guardian must fulfill all the requirements of a Museum Docent. Group/Business Volunteers



Is your group or business looking for a volunteer opportunity? The MMCM welcomes groups to help with many special events, painting, gardening, and other unique projects. A group contact person must complete this Group Volunteer Application.


Additional Volunteer Opportunities

From keeping exhibits in top shape to helping out with special events, MMCM welcomes volunteers  who provide the best possible experience for each and every visitor. Other volunteer positions include:

  • Community Outreach – Represent and assist MMCM at special events at various locations. The events may be held at the museum site or at other locations around the Great Lakes Bay Region

  • Family Friendly Entertainers – MMCM is looking for volunteers who are interested in performing, playing music, singing, and sharing their talents through family-friendly entertainment

  • Gallery Crew – Assist in preventative maintenance that preserves the life of the exhibits and assures a clean and safe experience for children

  • Gardening – MMCM is looking for volunteers to help maintain our wildflower and perennial garden from April through October. Opportunities include weeding, painting, trimming, raking, watering, and deadheading flowers as needed

  • Groups (3)
  • Grant Writer – Assists with research, writing and editing grant proposals to foundation and corporate sources

  • Marketing and Greeter – Greet MMCM visitors upon arrival. Distribute information on events, memberships, birthday parties, and other opportunities

  • Office Support – Provide clerical assistance to the MMCM administrative staff: preparing materials for publications, bulk mailings, data entry, copying, filing, answering phones, taking messages, etc

  • Special Event Volunteer – Help out with party planning for Arts from the Heart, Day with Dad, Candy Free Egg Hunt, and other fundraising events
